ME AND MY APPROACH
Therapy to me is an important and sacred space, allowing clients to explore their inner thoughts, emotions and experiences with no judgement. I believe each person's story to be special and deserves the opportunity to embrace their uniqueness, grow and thrive. Through my own journey as a British-born Chinese woman, I understand first hand the complexities and challenges around finding my own sense of identity and belonging whilst navigating different cultural values, expectations, and experiences.
Growing up, I found solace in music, television, gaming, and other creative mediums. These experiences were invaluable to me as they provided me with an appreciation for all the different ways people can find connection and engage in self-expression. Not only that, they played an important role in helping me to understand and develop a sense of identity and belonging with both online and offline communities. Therefore, I would like to create space for clients to embark on their own journey of self-exploration and self-expression as I know how important this can be for ones growth and development.
In practice I work primarily as a person-centred counsellor with elements of cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and psychodynamic theory, understanding current experiences and forming connections to the past. I also use creative and relatable ways to incorporate aspects of client's everyday life and interests, such as music, video gaming and other creative media, to support emotional awareness and self-expression.
AREAS OF INTEREST
I am particularly interested in the role technology can play in self-reflection, especially through video gaming. This was the focus of my university dissertation, where I explored how virtual personas were used in developing self-awareness as part of the therapeutic process.
I also have great interest in supporting those who are exploring their cultural identity, including the complexities of managing and balancing expectations and lived experiences, as well as, those navigating life transitional stages.
Lastly, I recognise the experience of loss and grief can often be part of these journeys, and aim to offer a space to gently explore this with care and sensitivity. While these are my primary interests I am not restricted them and can support in other areas should they arise.
